I don't understand, why did they have to haul it in and kill it?

I have fished in "meat fish" tourneyments (grouper, mahi, Wahoo, Snapper,etc.). I do not have a problem with it, as long as the fish is not wasted. Hunting is a time honored practice. You should eat what you kill. I have heard that longfin mako is not very palatable (uric acid in the flesh). But you could bet that IF I chose to kill such a fish, I would be eating mako steaks for a long time.

I agree with this statement for all types of hunting...this one just seemed for sport.

Hunting for anything other than food is a horrible practice. I don't understand the mind-set...

Exclamation Sad, sad, sad

i find this incredibly sad. i'm not upset at the people that caught the shark, really. i feel that we as humans have been given a dominant position on the earth. but we have long since lost respect for what that should mean. it does not mean we should go out and kill everything that can be killed, especially for a profit or simple sport. Especially a species that is becoming very vulnerable. and it is such a critical species at that.

feel like getting a bit educated. i recommend the movie Sharkwater. it doesn't come out nation wide until november. but it is out in florida right now....go to the website and have a look...be sure and listen to the soundtrack from this movie, found on the left panel of the website....GREAT music.

I'm not much of a fisherman, but I'm with No Misses...doesn't bother me as long as they eat it. I'm guessing even though it's a tournament that surely that will happen...otherwise, why gut it?

Just another wasteful killing of a great animal. I read that story yesterday and it was pretty upsetting.
