Frightening Story

CDNN :: Dive Boat Propeller Hits Scuba Diver's Head

Nothing like this tragedy but I had a small fishing boat go over my head last year. I was in about 10 feet of water at the time but it still got my attention.

I have seen some near misses in busy locations like in Thailand. The major reason to have a DSMB on you.

Agree...I carry two, just in case, but this one has to be a mix of tragic mistakes.

Luckily, the diver wasn't another fatality. Diving from boats has the potential to be pretty dangerous. Anything from boarding a pitching ladder to this type of mishap. It pays to be vigilant, aware of your surroundings, and have good safety equipment with you, like the before-mentioned SMB. Listening carefully to the pre-dive briefing can make the dive much safer.

Even with proper equipment and buoys you are at risk. I just read in this month's DAN Alert Diver about a tug boat that ran right over the top of a dive buoy in spite of efforts of the dive boat to cross its path and use the radio to alert the tug! Now that is scary. Proves the point made that you as the diver MUST be aware of your surroundings above and below the surface.

The problem even with a SMB is that not all boaters are educated as to what they are, or what they mean. Some don't even know what the dive flag/alpha flags mean. It's another reminder that we are 100% responsible for looking out for ourselves when diving.

I can't tell you how many times we have had to lay on the bottom because of the idiots in this world! We had someone with a ski-chair to go over us a year ago and that was something out of the movies...I don't know if you guys know what I am referring to but it sticks fown in the water quite a ways.....since then we have given out a few A-- chewings to people coming near our dive flags and you know....word gets around QUICK!

Here on this Island, wave runners and speed boats wizz around like drag cars. There is lots and lots of diving, all day, all over the island. The dive flag? the wave runners often like to play crash with them. The only reason most folks are safe, is we go down in the closed areas, dive the reef, and swim all the way back to the start, and surface. Almost every dive you hear at least ONE motor wizz by. It is an act of God that people aren't getting chopped once in a while, as the anntilians often don't like tourists, or divers. Not all of them, but a few bad apples. A lot of the wave riders are high on cocain, as south america is just a couple miles away. 'Gotta watch.
