Thumbs down Deadly to sharks-Vermont Country Store

I recieved this notice from Oceana (Oceana campians to protect and restore the world's oceans) regaurding a product sold by The Vermont Country Store that uses shark "squalane" from deep sea sharks. If you would like to know more read the email below and follow the link.......

Earlier this year Oceana staffers were shocked to discover a company with a very familiar name, "Oceana," has been manufacturing 100 percent pure shark squalane as a skin enhancer. The irony was not lost on us that a company with our name has been promoting the death of the very species we are working to protect.

But even worse, the Vermont Country Store sells the stuff.

Squalane is obtained from the livers of deep sea sharks, which are some of the most vulnerable sharks in the world. Deep sea sharks typically grow slowly, mature late in life and have only a few young during their long lives. As a result, deep sea shark populations are at extreme risk and only recover very slowly.

It's simply wrong to let sharks disappear for the sake of personal beauty, especially when squalane can be made from alternatives such as olives. The health of our oceans depends on the survival of sharks, and yet sharks continue to suffer at the hand of humans.

>>Take Action: Tell the Vermont Country Store to stop peddling shark squalane!

Wow! How sad to hear that they continue to kill the sharks when there is an alternative. There are plenty of moisturizers out there...why kill such a magnificent animal for a moisturizer...just doesn't seem to make much sense.

You beat me to it DevilDiver. I received the same e-mail from Oceana and was going to put it up here for anyone interested in signing the petition. Good work. I signed and sent mine in when I received it.

I am wondering if they actually been asked to stop selling this already a while ago, or has this campaign started very recently? The default message basically calls for a boycott - which might make sense if they have refused to do anything for awhile, but maybe not if they haven't had a chance to respond yet. Good chance they are simply clueless about what they are selling.

They don't appear to be selling it anymore. I checked when this was posted and checked again to see if it went away, and it has.

Damselfish is correct. I just checked and they are no longer advertising it for sale on their website. This is good news. Looks like the petition may have worked.

Why would anybody want to rub the liver of a shark on them self in the first place?! It's horrible to kill animals for the sake of beauty.

It just seems like SO much more work getting it fron deep water sharks, than from the olives? even if you didn't like sharks, or care, from a profit margin, you'd THINK they'd go with them olives. oh well, I'm just a dumn Fireman.
