That sucks. It's gonna be tough on the son, for sure. Condolences to family...

Sounds like something catastrophic happened while surface snorkeling back. Maybe heart attack? Or heck, maybe a shark got him on the surface...

Man that sucks.

My condolences to the family. Wow...hits home..you're fine one minute having fun on vacation and the next your whole world has changed. Words can't express the sorrow and loss this family must be feeling.

I read an story of a guy that surfaced in calm water because he was sheltered from the wind by the boat. He took out his reg and removed his mask, the boat turned and instantly caused waves to hit him and he sucked down a ton of water, they boat captain saw what happened and got to him quickly but they still could'nt revive him. He died on the way to the hospital. I wonder if this could have been a similar incident, just no one saw him drowning? You tend to think of accidents only occuring under water, this made me realize that just because you have surfaced near the boat you still need to keep your wits about you!

It was a tragedy for sure. My condolences to the families involved.

Not sure why they had to mention the part about being mauled by sharks. Served no purpose... Don't you love the press.

Maybe as a possible reason for why he dissapeared? Attacked sharks while snorkeling back?

They didn't mention about his air supply and cause of death. So this may be the reason he died. But then again the media with their sensationalism can't be sensitive to the victims family and the diving community..

And know how to drop your weight in an emergency at the surface.

They clearly state the divers had resurfaced and were making a surface swim back to their entry when the diver dissapeared so his air supply isn't really relevent.

Attacked by sharks or something along the lines of heart attack would be the plausible cause... don't know if an autopsy will reveal what happened or not. All they do know is the body had been mauled by sharks in the day it took them to find it. Becuase of this, I don't think the comment in the article is out of place at all... and I'm sure the family already knows what condition the body was found in.

Really, losing a family member like that on vacation, the condition of the corpse is the least of your concerns. I couldn't imagine what it'd be like to be in that situation...
