Damn, that's not good. The canyon slopes off pretty quickly and you can find yourself very deep without much effort. There'scan be a lot of rips out there as well. Hope he recovers.

Just as an update, the 47 year old male involved apparently ran out of air. Local authorities have impounded the gear and are investigating why. Totally sad.

A sad event indeed- a good reason to dive with a buddy, and never alone on your first dive at an unfamiliar site.
