Dive Shops near Port LaVaca TX?

I want to get some relatives in Texas into diving. Is there a shop near Port LaVaca, TX? It is about halfway between Houston and Corpus Christi. Matagorda bay is nasty, but I thought there might be something nearby.

I live in Port Lavca. Unfortunately the nearest shop is in Corpus Christi. There is a shop in Palacious but its not a full time place. He will do lessons but only with a group. I believe he does do airfills as well and sells some gear. He works at the hospital there since there is not much dive buisness in this area.

PM me if you have any more questions. I can try to help ya out as best I can .

If you look to the left of the messages, you will see some basic info from the sender including their screen name. If you click on their screen name a drop down box will appear and "Create Private Message" is one of your options. Click on that and then the rest is like sending an email. Let us know if you have any more questions! By the way, welcome to ST!!!

As I understand it, there are a couple of dive operators in the Freeport, TX area. The boat ride to the oil rigs was $250 per person. That seems kind of high compared to other dives I've been on. Is that standard for the area?

Another question about Port LaVaca. Do you think that it would be a good place for a dive shop?

I should preface this by saying that:
1. I don't know anything about the diving in the area.
2. I have only been in the bay a few times.

no, there would not be enough business to keep you going there. the distance to good diving is too far by boat and there is no shore diving. fresh water diving, i.e. lakes, rivers or quarries, is also pretty far.
