I had trouble on a cruise ship once with my dive knife. Not getting it on the ship originally but getting it back on after diving. When I pointed out that it is only a 3" knife they let it go. But I don't travel Cruise ships with it anymore for fear that they will confiscate it.
Like I'm going to take over a cruise ship with a blunt tipped 3" BC knife.

I have a question. Well, maybe 2.

How come my little 1" blade from my Swiss Army wallet tool was confiscated and they will allow a 4" scissor or screw driver. And at the same airport, while waiting to board, I was able to eat at a concourse restaurant which ofered us large pointy steak knives with our meals?

Please help. I am getting tired of dealing with checked luggage these days and thinking of switching to all carry on. We have warm water gear and could easily do this, but what do we do about our blunt tipped knives? Mail them ahead and back? leave them at home and carry on blunt tipped shears? line cutters? I have had a small (less than 1") pair of folding scissors confiscated in the past! Any help will be appreciated.

I doubt that they will allow you to carry on EMT shears.

Here is the answer: You are dealing with the TSA not normal people. Clear as mud?

this link says that it is OK as long as they are blunt tipped shears or short blades

Scissors - plastic or metal with blunt tips. Yes Yes
Scissors - metal with pointed tips and blades shorter than four inches in length. Yes Yes
first Yes is for carry-ons, second one is for checked bags

Even though some shears are supposed to be ok to carry on, don't count on it no matter what the rules say. Stock up on the cheap shears and expect to lose them sometimes. Maybe try a line cutter, but I don't know if that's a sure thing either. They might be afraid you could take it apart or something.

A pair of scissors is handy when traveling and I got a pair for that purpose, basically kids school scissors with short rounded blades. Figured that should be ok and they have gotten by a few times, but were also a problem at least once.
