We put our knives in a small pelican box with a post-it taped over one of the latches stating that the box contains knives.

Haven't been overseas so I'm not much help with that end. However, I've traveled in the U.S. and always taken my knife. Never had a problem. I always stick it in my checked luggage that has my fins. Figured that the TSA agent would realize it was for diving (maybe I'm figuring to much). I also declare my knife when I check my bag even though the agents tell me I only have to do that for a firearm (once again, maybe I'm thinking too much).

The only thing I know is the horror stories about overseas travel. All kinds of things missing and I've heard many horror stories of items stolen. Myself, I'd still take a knife but I'd take my ultra cheapy so that if it got stolen I would only be out $3.95.

That's a good idea, never thought of that.

i know that is what worries me about missing gear. i am trying to cram most of my dive stuff into a carry on , really all i need is swim trunks and t shirts. but they don't allow knives on planes so i have to check something

Oh I just saw this as well, "NOTE: Any sharp objects in checked baggage should be sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury to baggage handlers and inspectors."

Yep, that's why we have the pelican box, since the sheathes for our BCs are attached to the BC. I'd rather have all the knives together, in case one comes unsheathed in transit; I'd rather that it didn't bounce around and slice up our stuff.

funny thing irony , with a name like that i think it be safer to ask than to find out the hard way and have the fbi/nsa do some sort of check on me and my website chronicles than i really would be in hot water !!!
but seriously i rarely travel with a blade just a line cutter, but this trip i thought it would be a good idea to ask about one and to bring it since i will be in some open water. the idea of being locked up in some jail overseas just would put a damper on the end of a great trip ( i hope). so hence the question.
