I actually got into an arguement with a cashier once over a dollar coin - some clueless kid who'd never seen one and tried to tell me they coudldn't accept it.

Just remember, there's no such thing as a stupid question, but there are plenty of inquisitive idiots...

Don't travel with coins. They are very difficult to dispose of. Most countries, not only want paper only, but want nothing smaller than CRISP twenties. If a bill is worn, many Asian/Pacific Rim areas won't take them. One time in Bali, I was approached by the head baggage porter at the airport. He asked If I could change out worn paper dollars. I told him I could and he pulled out a huge roll of ones that all the porters had accumulated over the years. I was able to change them all out. He was forever grateful. When looking through the old bills, I found three silver certificates!!! They must have had some of them since the war! I still have them.

when we went to Costa Rica we left a $5 as a tip, the waiter followed us out of the restaurant and requested a new $5 since 1 corner was torn off. we had not noticed but we then packed that bill away for use in USA.

Well the average lifespan of a $1 bill is estimated by the federal reserve to be just 18 months, so coinage makes sense in that regard. In other weird treasury news, a penny costs more to make than its worth. Time to get rid of them yet?

i would have taken my five and given him nothing!!!
i tip generously, and i always treat people nicely (that deserve it)
but for something like that... i'd be pissed.
i was in DR last year (or 2 ago) and had gotten lots of single to tip the people from the resort we were at... the money was wet most of the time (i had it in my shorts and spent most of the summer drunk in the pool or ocean) and they were always great-full and aways treated us well... so we took good care of em too.
