I would not take them. It's likely they have never seen a US $1 coin and even if they have it's unlikely they would take it. Besides, do you really want to carry them because of weight. If you have a layover in the US, you could spend them at the airport....may not make the cashier happy but at least you got rid of them. I don't bother with much cash at all, between CCs and the local ATM I just don't see a need to carry much cash.
