I would not take them. It's likely they have never seen a US $1 coin and even if they have it's unlikely they would take it. Besides, do you really want to carry them because of weight. If you have a layover in the US, you could spend them at the airport....may not make the cashier happy but at least you got rid of them. I don't bother with much cash at all, between CCs and the local ATM I just don't see a need to carry much cash.

Just take the family out to dinner and leave them all on the table to pay and run! In all seriouness My Wife keeps them in her car to the next time she goes to the post office she can return the favor and pay with them.
