go to your local bookstore or amazon.com and get the book "Big Island Revealed", easy to find (blue cover). It is a great book with everything you need to know including maps, info on topside activities, hotels, parks, diving...
I would do a few days of boat diving if you can, especially the night manta dive. We used Kona Honu divers while there but heard great things about Jack's Diving Locker and Big Island Divers, too. Boat diving is more expensive but you can get to other sites you can't do by shore diving. Most shore areas on Kona are hard black lava and very rugged, not easy entry or exit from what we saw. The book gives good info on that. Also check out the website: ShoreDiving.com - Your Shore Diving and Snorkeling Web Community! for Kona dive sites photos and info.

have fun and be sure to go down to visit the volcanos nat'l park a full day. It is absolutely amazing! Also a day over to Hilo area for waterfalls. (the book gives maps and details on all of them).

Ditto on the "Big Island Revealed" (We're planning our trip for May) Also, KONAWEB - Online Resource for the Big Island & Kona, Hawaii has been very helpful and on their site is a link to a shore diving site for Kona LET'S GO SHORE DIVE'N' on the Kona Coast

And while I can understand the budget, I think you may want to consider splurging and doing the Manta Dive one night. Everything I've heard about it indicates it's a truely awesome experience. DH and I are doing our Boat Dives with Wanna Dive Kona. We'll report back when we return.

Actually just south of Honokau Harbor there is great shore diving.....if you hang out there in the morning, you'll see all the dive boats come in, they are only about 300 yds off the rocks......check it out....

And if you want to go Fishing, look up Capt. Billy Dorr on the "Why Knot"...great captain, great boat, priced right.....

Aloha....
