I haven't been there, but there's a brief paragraph on Zanzibar and a section on East Africa diving in Diving the World by Tierney and Tierney (great book). Apparently the diving is better on Pemba Island, which is north of Zanzibar. According to the Tierney's, Zanzibar viz is less than stellar, and the reefs are very shallow. Still, I'm sure it's worth a few dives, since you're there anyway enjoying the topside attractions. Have fun!

Having been diving in that region, my advice is simply to bring as many old and disused cell phones or other small electronic devices with you as you can. They have a very high trade value for their size, and can be used to significantly offset the cost of all sorts of things in what in my experience is a very barter-intensive part of the world. Cheap (but good looking) sunglasses and wristwatches are also good, and if you're feeling charitable, I don't think there's a school in the region that doesn't need all the supplies they can get. A box of chalk or pencils can make you a lot of friends.
I'd advise against wearing or carrying anything flashy... unless you're willing to trade or part with it. As far as the diving goes, it was pretty straightforward in Kenya, and I don't guess it's much different to the south. Just mind that you go when the weather's agreeable. Vis can vary greatly depending on how recently the last monsoon rains came.
