Roatan Advice?

Hi, new to the board. Headed for Roatan in 2 weeks. Will be staying at Anthony's Key Resort. Any tips or advice regarding Roatan would certainly be appreciated. Coqui Diver

hmm....bug spray...

oh, and be prepared for the airport people to steal your batteries if you have any in carry on luggage when you're leaving.

...otherwise, it's all good!...make sure you do the shark dive!

Already bought four bottles of Ben's 100% deet lotion. Is that the Waihuka Diving Shark Dive? I was in Roatan for a day, on a cruise, three years ago and I did the shark dive with them. It was great. I certainly plan on doing it again. I'm also looking forward to the dolphin dive. I hadn't heard about the battery situation on departure. Any precautions I should take, or just write them off as a loss? Thanks!

We just got back from there Saturday. Take a trial size spray in your carry on (in the quart baggie) and apply it before getting off the plane. We kept some in the room and some at our cubby near the dock and applied it right after showering off with fresh water as well as before leaving the room.

There were two checks of our carry ons - one at xray machine past customs and one right at the gate going out to the plane. Each one found something they didn't already have at home or had run out of. They don't want you to have any hammocks or conch shells in your carry on. I asked at the counter - the hammocks have wood handles for conking someone and shell has sharp points for stabbing. No lie, that's what they said!

I always take all my non rechargables and give them to the dive guide/DMs before I leave as well as leave any shampoo, shaving cream, tooth paste etc for the maids along with a good tip for all since they don't get paid much.

Great! Thanks for the tips. Will try to keep just essential gear and clothing in carry on. Will also start applying bug juice while approaching runway. I'm starting to get excited about the trip.

go to rudy's for breakfast one day for a smoothie.

also be aware that a lot of the shops or places to eat are run by 7th day adventist & will close Saturday's. Get your shopping done early!

That's a bummer as with an afternoon flight its a perfect time to do the shopping before we leave..

If you go shopping in West End, there is a "large" store down towards the South end of the main street opposite of the bay. It has almost everything that you can find at any other shop. It actually is sort of an indoor market (the people inside are independants). If you go there, do not be afraid to "deal". At first they may not, but if you see some weavings, for example, and each is say $35... offer $50-$60 for both. If not accepted, go away and come back later. Being polite of course helps. Have fun!!! -DRg
