My 1st bad current dive
Well, I had a good lesson on diving to lite. I found myself that goofy guy that the divemaster had to chase. The feeling of tumbling in space was not a fun one. My buddy said they were all grouping together, looked up an I came by him like a bullet. Big props to all you Divemasters who keep guys like me safe in bad situations.
I didn't make that mistake twice and was able to dive fine afterwards and enjoy my week in mexico. I just never thought I'd be that guy.... |

Diving overweighted sucks (Air more than anythng) but diving to lite can suck the life right out of you. Until you are sure (IMHO) always err to the overweighted senerio.
Oh & by the way I never thought I would not be that guy, Yet I have been. Practice makes perfect, not the C-Card. Last edited by bottomdweller : 08-21-2008 at 10:03 PM. |

You were higher than everybody else in the water column ("my buddy..looked up..), so you were dealing with more current. Get down closer to the bottom where the friction mitigates the current.

Ha at least you had your first "oh sheit" moment while you were actually diving, and in Mexico no less. My "first" and only to date came during my OW class pool session. Well to be hones it was after the pool session in the parking lot of the Burlington VT YMCA. We were loading our gear into the dive shop truck to take it back when one of my frllow OW cantidates handsme what I thinks is (and looked like) Visine! LEts just say Untill that moment I thought ear beer was when you poored PBR in your wifes ear and slurped it out with a straw! I can say this, as nasty as that may sound (Now you hush up DD go to the corner), It has to be better than ear beer in your eye!! Oh man did that hurt and oh man did I get a ribbing from my DM/I,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ya I set the bar high and I set it early!

I did that once in Palau....unhooked at the Blue Corner instead of staying close to the bottom and swimming thru the current to the other side...I got caught up in taking pictures of the school of Barracuda I was in....then I turned around and tried to get back to my group in a 2-3 knot current....Blowing thru my air I signaled the DM I was low on air....He was about 30' from me...he signaled for me to go up....thinking I was about 60' I wanted air...by the time he got to me, I grabbed his Octo.....I was bobbing on the surface....Did I feel like an ass!

On a different note but related to the "I'm an IDIOT" feeling: it was my first ocean dive and I was in Cozumel. Had a good dive on the Santa Rosa Wall. We hit the surface and while waiting for the dive boat (our group was just a tiny bit spread out) I see this COOL looking fish swimming and bobbing at the surface. It wasn't far away and I wanted to get a photo with my new camera, just needed to improve the angle and get just a bit closer. I head down surface swim towards him and realize suddenly that I'm heading into the path of another dive boat. I stop, totally forgetting about the fish and he passes by. I head back towards the group and Jose the divemaster humbly, gently, and kindly says, "Be careful, you know that boat never saw you." I felt like SUCH a heel. It's amazing how quickly the moment can make you forget your training and pull some stupid stunt like that.
