I suppose it depends on the specific cruise lines and destinations. Any restrictions concerning dive knives on a cruise ship is little more than Kabuki theatre. After all, I can simply grab any knife from a on board restaurant, or enter any unlocked kitchen during non-working hours.

What would be the point? Security check points on a ship is akin to security at any airport. Basically smoke and mirrors. Be observant long enough and the truth will be seen.

cheers

If you are close on the weight of your bag remember it will be heavier if you pack your gear wet for the trip home. I was fortunate I was under the limit by quite a bit so it wasn't an issue.

That's a very good point. We had a balcony which served to dry gear. My gear and suitcase weighs in at 47lbs dry, so if wet, it would have been over.

The suitcase, held together by electrical wire and tape, has made its last trip though. Time to give Larry some money for a new one.

cheers

I took a dive knife on a cruise a few years ago. No problem at all.

Be sure to post your experience when you get back. We are going on a cruise in May and would like to know how it went.

I did Royal Caribbean to Key West, Cozumel, and Grand Cayman. Both my daughter and I had dive knives in our gear. Her's was confiscated and held by ship security. She could check it out at every stop in order to dive but then she had to turn it back in each time. It was a hassel. I also had a knife but they did not take it.

The difference between the two knives was that mine was folding "pocket knife" type consturction and her's was a fixed blade sheath knife type construction. The blades were essentially the same length.

That was my first and only cruise. It's not my cup of tea. Give me a liveaboard every time, or a dive resort if no liveaboard services that area.

Have fun. Dive safe.

I'm agreeing 100%, I would rather fly to a location and dive, rather than put up with 3000 crazy people on a boat. However, it is a good way to recon places you've not been and it keeps my wife happy.

On a cruise, I've carried m/f/s in a snorkle bag and rented gear, because I didn't own my own. My next cruise I'm taking it all, but I'll most likely drive to the port unless I find a really good airfare ATL-FLL x 4.

I've heard carry a dive knife on a cruise can be a real hassle because every time you board the ship you have to turn it in and then you get delayed when leaving the ship while they retrieve it for you. With limited time at most ports, it can be frustrating waiting a half an hour for a knife. I just take shears.

I cruise because my kids love it and I enjoy it too, but I look forward to taking a vacation and staying somewhere for a week.
