Cruise Ship & Dive Gear

So, I'm going on a cruise for Christmas with my wife to the Bahamas and I'm wondering about my gear. I have already figured out that I can check my dive knife for my flight to Florida. What about taking my knife onboard the ship? I can't seem to find the exact answer anywhere. We're going to be on Royal Caribbean. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have brought all of my gear on a NCL america ship in Hawaii, who has a very simmilar policy to that of RC. I packed it in my checked bag. and it made it to my room and even when my bag was checked on the ship after being on shore the security guard saw it and let me keep it anyway. It think the size of the knife may make a difference. But I would expect to have to hand it over if they ask.

I had shears attached to my BCD and Princess never batted an eye but the divemasters in St Lucia wouldn't allow a knife but had no problem with shears. FYI in St Lucia they also didn't allow gloves.

Thanks for the good tips. Any idea on the Bahamas? Gloves and/or knife allowed?

On another note, is it worth it for me to bring my gear or just rent? In looking at prices for everything, it looks like it will cost me $34 to rent everything at Stuart Cove (BC, regs, m/s/f, w/s.) If I bring most of my gear (I don't have a BC or regs) I'll need to rent them for $16 and pay $30 r/t for my gear on the plane. So in the end, I can wear most of my own stuff and pay $46 or rent everything and pay $34. Just wondering due to size of room on ship and stuff like that. Any info on previous experiences would be greatly appreciated.

So I assume then what you would be bringing is your mask, fins & wetsuit?

I would bring my own mask at least. Doesn't take up that much space and is the one thing you really need a must fit.

Assume the fins are full foot.

The other question would be if you are going to snorkel at any other stops, it might be nice to have your own gear for that too.

I would bring my own m/s/f, wetsuit, and boots (fins are not full foot.) As for snorkeling, not sure, but the possibility is always there which is another reason for maybe bringing my own gear. I just don't want to be overcrowded in an already small cabin room. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

It would say it depends, if you can find gear off the rack that fits you well then it's fine to rent as long as the dive op you pick has decent gear. (not always the case) If you're like me and can not find off the rack that fits well then the choice should be obvious.

I prefer my own mask, fins & snorkel, but it shouldn't be a big deal

Since you're renting the reg, see if they will put a new mouth piece on for you or bring your own.
