Just look for a foreclosed property and pop a tent in the backyard. If any one asks just tell them your trying it out before you buy. There's got to be a lot of vacant houses down there!

There must be state land to camp on.

My parents live in Bradenton fl and i'd love to check out the keys as part of a family vacation but I think my tent camping days are over. No way I'd get my wife in one of those again.

I hear that there are some very nice dive spots in the keys. Although being from Buffalo, any water temp above 55 would be a tropical dive for me.

Can you define "budget" ?

We are heading down in about a week - hotel room with kitchenette for $68 per night and 3 boat trips for $195.

I think the only camping is more towards the largo but could be wrong.

You could do what me and several friends did, and just slept outside at a resorts pool area on the chairs thats free

I camped in the Keys a few times many years ago and it´s really false economy. You might save a little money for a lot of hassle. First, you´ll pay $35 and up for a site plus extra person and electric fees. There are private campgrounds and state parks where you can camp. My info on private places is too dated to bother with but there are state parks at Pennekamp, Long Key, and Bahia Honda near Marathon. Just get a cheap motel room where you will have a hot shower and a private bathroom and a mattress. Meals are where you can really blow a lot of money so paying a bit more to get a kitchenette where you can hit the grocery and make your own meals can save you lots of money.
