Diving in Montego Bay Jamaica

Hello Everyone, I'm heading out to Montego Bay Jamaica. I am going to stay at the Rose Hall resort. Dressel Divers is on the property of the hotel. I just think that they are a but pricey. They want $300 for 6 dives. I used Dive with Martin in Cozumel and I paid less than $170 for the same amount of dives back in November. Dive with Martin even picked me up at my hotel's pier every day.

Have any of you used a specific dive outfit in Montego Bay that was reasonably priced and offered good service. I want to dive and I feel I may have to just shell out the cash with Dressel. Suggestions anyone...thank you in advance.

Hi, I don't have any advice for you - I've never been to jamaica. However, I was wondering if you could post a trip report when you come back. I looked into Jamaica, briefly, in the past. I was suprised that it isn't brought up on boards very often. The impression that I got was that, while diving is done there, it's not a "dive destination" like cozumel, belize, etc. I would love to hear a first hand prospective about the Dive OP, vis, temperature, sealife, etc.

Good luck on getting your info.

I did a little googling - and found this shop to be avail at your hotel

Captainswatersports

They want 90 bucks for a 2 tank dive. So 270, for 6 tanks. Alot of these shops charge more for credit card, so you might look into using cash...but it's usually only about 10% difference. Also - it's possible the boats have to go farther out, than in Cozumel.

In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico the cost is similar 90 bucks for 2 tanks, but all the good sites are a 1 hour boat trip. Since P.V. is not a "dive destination" it's unusual for more than 6 divers to be on a boat...so, it cost more.

No problem, I will let you know how it goes. I have the same feeling as you. Jamaica is not really a diving destination. I figure I'll pay for four tanks and that's about it. After that I'll enjoy the beach and just relax in the sun. I also found these folks from a posting on this site: SUNDIVERS NEGRIL JAMAICA. I emailed them to ask if they would pick me up form my hotel but no response yet. I'm probably going to be forced to use Dressel Divers.

You are correct. Jamaica is not much of a diving destination since it is over fished by the locals and tourist have trashed the reefs. I have been there twice diving, most recently last december, and the reefs are in very bad shape. Jamaica itself is a beautiful island. It's more of a place to go on vacation with diving, but not a diving vacation. Enjoy your time away! We did.
