I'm so new at all of this that I don't even know what "OP" stands for....so someone please enlighten me.

Safety is definitely my first concern. Not only am I new diver but in early fall I'll be a new Daddy as well...twin girls on the way (still up in the air as to whether or not they are identical).

On the down side....I guess that my motorcycle riding days are behind me for awhile. Of course, I could make the argument with the soon to be wife that by getting rid of the bike I deserve a boat.

"Original poster" huh??? Thanks for the clarification. I figured that was what it was but I couldn't wrap my head around the actual words it might refer to.

Yeah...I figure that in late summer/early fall I'll be lucky to be able to find the time to scuba dive in the hot tub out back, much less thousands of miles away.
I need to start making that dive boat push right away before my girlie gets too big to care about my owns wants and makes me cater solely to hers. It'll be hard to argue with her then. Ha!

That's a good question. My wife is a non diver-non traveler so I struggle to find places that don't penalize the single traveler. I hate those single supplements that most places impose. I favor the few hotels/resorts that charge by the room rather than by the guest. Many hotels in Cozumel do that. And, in other locations, you can occasionaly (if you ask & business is slow) get the supplement waived. When I go to Bonaire, I try to stay at the Carib Inn which charges for the room (at a reasonable rate I might add).

I would skip the idea of buying a dive boat... all good places to dive have dive boats there and the cost to dive with them is waaay less than your payments and expenses to own a boat. Unless you live in South Fla, there is no reason to own one and I think I wouldn't even own one there, it just isn't very cost effective.

Back to talking about the dive trip, if you go to CCV this trip and you like it, just realize that the kiddos won't be allowed to return with you until they are certified divers and over age 10. It is an adults only resort - not that anyone is running around naked, its just the atmosphere they are trying to achieve. There are other resorts on Roatan, like AKR and FI, that are geared for families.

Although getting to Utila can be somewhat pain in the butt, you can usually get roundtrip for $600 per person from almost anywhere in the US, you can stay for a few dollars a night at a dorm, or rent an apartment for $400 a month - its all cheap... then diving can be had on a nice boat for $55 per two tank trip or $250 for 10 dives... being that you are a newer diver, what I would recommend if you were to come here, would be to do your advanced open water certification... you get 5 dives with the course, including a night dive if you like, then you get 2 free fundives as well... it's 7 dives for $270, but you get an awesome experience at some of the coolest places around the island and a few nights free stay at a dorm, or a good discount on the nicer rooms too...

there are all kinds of options here...
