I dove in San Juan this Feb during a stop on a cruise ship. It was a quick little shore dive for a tootle around the harbour. Frankly, I should have saved my time and money for a land based tour. The vis was poor and the sights to see were nothing special. We did see a fair number of small fish but nothing to stir the soul.
Reports from other people on the ship ranked the Segway tours of Old San Juan as the best trip. |

La Parguera on southside is/was a great site. I did dive there many years ago (1986). Culebra a small island off the south coast have always had my interest but have never gone. I go to bonaire every year for last 10, so you know my prejudice. if you go would like to hear how it was, you never know I could do something different. must be old age I keep doing what's made me happy and don't experiment much :-)

Puerto Rico is not a bad place to dive but you must get out of San Juan. We've dove out of La Parguera (SW corner) many times and its a great wall, but the fish life is rather limited the last time we were there 3 years ago. The reef starts at about 55 and drops. The hotels are modest. The west end is very good if you can go to Deseheo island. We used Taino divers but the cross channel trip is weather dependent. Great fish life. Hotels run a full range of prices.

Thanks. I was thinking the southwest, including Desecho Island. So, La Parguera is not that great anymore with the pollution?
Any recommendations on places to stay around there, preferably with good eco policies? Thanks
