I better go back through and read through my plan (preferred).....

I thought the accidental insurance covered if you were 50 miles away from home.

Only 10K for evacuation???? I thought it was more.

Mitsuguy, DAN didn't help out much with your wifes accident, wow!!

I'm starting to wonder if this is a good deal.

mitsuguy, you are correct that the medical coverage for dive accidents requires you to be in the water. Only the premium plan has 10K of general medical coverage which as you point out, only goes so far. But you are incorrect about the medical evacuation. The medical evacuation is not attached to the dive accident insurance, it is part of the general DAN membership. The coverage is to 100,000 for emergency transport for any medical emergency. That is why they have so many non divers carrying DAN memberships.

24-Hour DAN TravelAssist
As a DAN Member, you automatically receive DAN TravelAssist and up to $100,000 of evacuation assistance coverage. Effective for both diving and non-diving injuries, this benefit is provided by AIG Travel Assist, a world leader in emergency evacuation services. Your evacuation coverage begins when you are traveling at least 50 miles/80 km from home and call DAN TravelAssist to arrange your evacuation.

Snagel, this is what DAN states about the dive accident plans. It is WAY worth it!

Dive Accident Insurance*
DAN offers three plans to choose from, with no mileage restriction when you use your dive accident or injury coverage.

just keep that little tidbit in mind...

Yes, I'll keep it in mind. If I ever get hurt within sight of the water I will grit my teeth and refrain from uttering a sound, with all my might drag myself into the water, then cry out in sheer agony.

Once when I was going on a trip to somewhere in the Caribbean, I was worried about the possibility of trip cancellation due to hurricanes. I called and talked to a very nice person at DAN who told me that you can add the trip insurance up to the point that they name the storm. Luckily, I didn't have to purchase it, but was nice to know.

I have heard that regular insurance company's won't accept U because being a diver is risky.

You are talking about insuring trip costs, not dive accident coverage, right?

I can imagine that some might exclude coverage for accidents related to "extreme sports." Heck, they all exclude coverage for anything you actually have unless mandated by law to cover it, so it isn't much of a stretch to think they might exclude coverage for accidents related to voluntary sports activities. Behooves one to check with their insurer.

I know that diving is a BIG ding on disability insurance.

A case could be made that diving may reduce mental health claims

You should contact your insurance and talk to them about what they will/will not cover in a dive accident. I thought for sure they would try and say it's not covered, but they told me it would be covered. (Now, this is what they said, we will see if I ever need it what happens). I actually had the owner of our company in the office (health coverage through company group plan) when I talke to them. Best witness I could find, since she pays the premium.

Read your policy. Like any contract, what they say to you personally means nothing, it's what they put in writing that counts.
