DAN fine print...did you know?
I am not sure if I have posted this before, my apologies if I have.
So I have been looking carefully at the fine print of my DAN benefits. I discovered some GREAT things. 1. The regular DAN membership (not the dive accident insurance) covers medical evacuation for both diving and non diving medical emergencies!!! Isn't that terrific? I find that very reassuring. Should I get into a situation like I recently did here at home, I can be quickly transported to an appropriate medical facility, even if I am hours out at sea on a liveaboard. I was told that many non divers have DAN memberships just for this benefit. 2. The preferred level dive accident insurance, of course mostly covers dive accident stuff, but it also has 10,000 dollars of coverage for non diving related medical expenses. These would be subjugated to your regular insurance if you have it, i.e., your regular insurance would pay first. |

Well the cool thing is that the medical evacuation is not even part of the selected plan for dive accident insurance, it is part of the basic membership. I carry the preferred plan for dive accident insurance too. Dive accidents are expensive. I want them covered well. |

Just renewed mine - really $105/year is very reasonable for what you get. I guess I'm just a skeptic and fear an insurance company trying to pull every loop-hole out there when you try and use it.
Has anybody ever had to use it? If so, how did it go? Was it a typical fight with the insurance situation or did they take care of everything? Snagel |

It would behoove most to inquire as to what their primary insurance covers, dive accidents, travel needs, etc. |

Also, on the preferred plan, the coverage for non diving accidents only applies if the accident occurs out side the country of residence. I read the thread above and called DAN today. I had a nasty snow skiing accident last March and spent a week in the hospital. Those out of pocket bills are showing up daily in the mail, but DAN will not help because I am from Texas and my accident happened in Colorado.

But one thing I do know is that if we ever do have universal coverage, it will not cover care when traveling outside of the US. In most countries which have a universal plan, they have to buy trip insurance. |

One thing I can say for sure... if you want DAN to cover it, you HAVE to be in the water... for instance, my wife when she broke her leg, she was literally walking away from the dive site (the beach) when she fell, with gear on... no coverage except for the 10k general non-diving insurance (a broken leg like hers will probably total 50k or more by the time we're done), however, had her foot still been in the water, it would have been covered under the blanket dive accident policy...
just keep that little tidbit in mind... and medical evacuation is only 10k worth of coverage... that doesn't get you terribly far...
