Cancun/Riviera Maya bound...

Well, I was really excited... I am finally getting to travel down to Mexico this weekend for a good dive trip...reef dives, cenote dives...it was going to be great. Then I look at the forecast and what do I see for this weekend? Hurricane Ida... Really? I hope they rent surfboards because thats probably about all of the watersports I'm going to get to do... Does anyone know in the cenotes do they do dives even in the wind/rain?

Jason

Jason,

It looks like, if your lucky, that it will downgrade to a storm by the time you guys are there. I look forward to hearing about it when you get back.

The cenotes shouldn't be affected unless you're dealing with a full on hurricane. High winds will close the harbor and shut down small boat traffic, but the cenotes are inland. Have fun!!

Well, just got back home and had a great time down in Mexico. The weather did not cooperate so we did not get to do any ocean/reef dives due to the Hurricane. It was amusing, most of the guests at the resort did not call it by name, just the b$#ch.

We did get to dive the cenotes though! We dove with Karl and his crew from Mayan Aqua Dive. I would recommend them to anyone. They were nothing but polite and professional and definitely geared towards the serious diver. They picked us up early at the resort and we drove down to Chac Mool cenote south of Playa Del Carmen. The rain at this point wasn't bad and the wind inland was pretty much nonexistant. On the way down we stopped at a little taco stand and picked up lunch and beverages for the day. Upon arriving we had the glorious revelation that we were the first and only group at the cenote so that stoked the guide! After gearing up and a good dive briefing we headed down. It was like walking into a paradise oasis. With the rain the steps down were plenty slick though! As I am not the most graceful person I am glad I didn't slip down the stairs. I was quite concerned with bouyancy as that is still one of my biggest issues to work on but it was not an issue on the dives... The first dive we took track 1 which included a little longer tour and through some tighter areas. Luckily they gave us good lights to use as it was pretty dark in there! Saw some great fossilized corals and a freshwater eel! The haloclines were pretty interesting down deeper. It is definitely good to have the low viz training when working in those! The first dive lasted about 50 minutes. We took a little surface interval and enjoyed the rain and then it was time for the 2nd track. This dive didn't have the tighter tunnels but was a bit deeper with more haloclines. The cool factor on it was "The Church". Swimming up into an air dome is a room full of stalactites (my spelling is way off, I know). You could sit and talk in this area which was great! The second dive was a little shorter... about 45 minutes. All in all well worth it! If you are ever in the area give the cenotes a try for sure! I plan on going back to get my cavern certification there!

Not that deep. I will have to review my computer but I think the deepest we got on the first dive was about 40-45 feet. On the second dive I know I saw a 48 foot briefly.
