Never been diving out of US, airfare to cancun seems to be less expensive, how is diving there and a recommendation on where to stay and dive

The diving in Cancun prior to the hurricane was really good. Great reefs and viz.

You can fly into CUN and take the ferry to Cozumel. A little more hassle than if you are flying right into COZ, but if staying more than just a couple of days it is definately worth it.

Flying into Cancun gives you a great variety of diving choices--take the ferry to Cozumel, plan some diving in the cenotes a little further south, and of course whatever local diving there is in Cancun. I personally wouldn't choose to stay in Cancun for a diving vacation, I'd head south to Akumal or over to Cozumel, but that has nothing to do with the quality of diving in Cancun, and more to do with preferring the more laid back atmospheres in the other locations.
