Punta Cana
I am going to Punta Cana for a week in February with the family, I am hoping to make a couple of dives there as a warm up to a dive trip to Maldives on a live aboard in March. Has anyone done any diving in Punta Cana in mid February? What should I bring? What can I expect to see?

Here are my pictures from Punta Cana in January. I was ok with a 3 mil shorty, but you may want to bring a full 3 mil suit.

Punta Cana was so-so; I dove there in March of last year. With the exception of the wreck right off the beach and beautiful scenery above water, there wasn't much to see underwater. Considering there was a hurricane the year before I went, I still believe you will be slightly disappointed if you go there with high expectations. If you stay at the Majestic Colonial or anywher close they have an inhouse dive shop that is well serviced and have a respectable crew of dm's. They are linked with the rest of dive establishments along the beach since they aren't enough divers at each hotel to service. The boat they had was only big enough for 4-5 people but you were practically diving by yourself out there so there was none of that 'bumper to bumper' diving like in Cozumel.
I had fun diving there but it's not a repeat destination for me like akumal or bonaire. |

I'll have to agree that there isn't anything to justify a trip to Punta Cana specifically for diving, but I enjoyed seeing a few wrecks and the water was nice and warm in January. If you will be staying at the Punta Cana resort, I'll warn you that their dive gear and the people in charge of it were more than a bit sketchy, so you might want to bring your own or look elsewhere.

Has anybody used Dressel divers, I'm going to Punta Cana in May, my friends & wife don't dive so I will be doing some morning dives & a couple of trips to the different Islands for some wall dives trying to save some money by doing advanced booking saving about 15% which can add up over 5 days of diving

I enjoyed Punta Cana, but there was not an overabundance of marine life. My understanding is that the fishing is unregulated and the commercial boats can get pretty close to shore. The water was beautiful; clear and warm, and much better than a quarry. I think people tend to underrate DR because of its proximity to other great diving areas.
