Going to Gulf Shores(Al) Penascola Area

We are going to be in the Gulf Shores Area of Alabama the week of 1/25 and were wondering if anyone had ever dived there this time of year. Based on what I have read it looks like an off time with nasty weather that can unexpectedly pop up. However, coming from New England, diving in the gulf is an opportunity I simply can not pass up and it does looks like there is a wreck or two accessible from the beach.

Anyone got any dive stories, advice for the Gulf Shores/Penascola Area in January?

The water will be in the mid 50's and the seas may be too rough - the bad days outnumber the good days. There are always the springs, if not flooded.

Get with Gary's Gulf Divers (Gary's Gulf Divers, Full Service Dive Shops, Orange Beach, Alabama), and dive the Oriskany, a 900-food aircraft carrier. You can read about it on his website. ReefHound is right, though, weather may be a problem. Right now seas are 8.5 feet. You're not diving anything in that.

a 900 "FOOD" aircraft carrier! Man, the last time I was on a carrier I could swear we only had about 14 different foods they just switched the days of the week they served it.

Couldn't resist.

The weather is the weather. That's all luck of the draw. Right now the water temp is 65 but that'll continue to go down. The low last night was in the 30's. The Oriskany is "the" dive to do if you can only do one. Call now as most places are booked well in advance. MBT divers in Pensacloa does trips to the "Mighty O" as well.
