Cabo San Lucas
Just booked a cruise (Princess) that starts in Mexico and finishes in Seattle Wa. Going to dive one day in Cabo San Lucas. They talk about the Sand Falls or Rivers of sand at Pelican Rock this is one of the possible sites for the day. Quote "The Sand Falls look like waterfalls but are composed entirely of sand. A must for all underwater photographers." Just curious has anybody been there what are they talking about? |

We have been to Cabo several times. The diving is not what I would call great. The diving can be interesting though, and we try to dive when we go there. I have not had an opportunity to dive the sand falls, and have not talked to anyone who has. Most of the times, the dive operations we have been with tend to go to Pelican Rock, the Sea Lion colony , North wall and the Pinnacle (Lands End). Since you'll be arriving on a Cruise ship, those will most likely be what is offered to you. The visibility can be hit or miss. We will be back there in April. Have a great trip1

I thought the sand falls was just ok, I think the DM kicked at the sand to get some of it going to make it more interesting. I like the Sea Lion Rock and Land's End sites the best. This past Nov I had a little sea lion girl following me around and playing, there were at least 10 sea lions in the water with us at one point and we saw them for most of the dive. The vis is just ok and the water may be a little chilly this time of year but there are a lot of fish to see. Lots of eels, porcupine fish and rays. Have fun.

Perhaps it's different at various times of the year and I was simply unlucky, but the last time I saw the Sand Falls site, it was more of a "Sand Trickle". Interesting... kinda.
Diving in Cabo is ok but not great. Of course, depending on what you are used to, ok diving can be pretty great. ![]() |

What time of year will you be here? The sand falls all depend on conditions, and normally donīt happen "by themselves" .....if vis is good, there are some very interesting (very) deep dives on the north and south wall. The sea lions are like big aquatic golden retrievers.....lots of fun....We donīt have reefs, so donīt expect anything other than Fan COral and rocks.....
How long are you going to be in Cabo? If you have time, try to get up to Cabo Pulmo.....thats great diving! depending on what time of the year you are here, we go from EXCELLENT diving, to "probably should have played golf" diving.....I splash at least once a week here, sort of like a weekly therapy session... Do you know which dive shop youīll be diving with? Let me know if I can help you with any restaurant or other reccomendations..... |

Diving from the cruise ship you will be worried about time to get back to the boat...... don't worry in CAbo. The ride out to the dive sites is 5 to 10 mins. I would recommmend Amigos Del Mar because they have big, comfy boats with all the emergency equip on board and their boats are kept at the dock right beside the cruise ship tender dock. Whatever dive op you use, look at pics of their boat, a lot of the Ops use a panga that is not comfy and has no room for your stuff.
