suggestions on Cancun

I'm planning a trip to the Cancun or Playa Del Carmen area and was looking for suggestions on dive opperators in that area. I went to Cozumel last year and would like to try the Reef around Cancun or Playa del Carmen this year. I have heard that Cozumel has much more to offer for divers but I'm pretty easily pleased as long as I have clear visibility. I'm taking the wife with me this time but she dont dive, so I plan on just doing a few two tank morning dives and 1 night dive since she will probably be in bed till noon,.........LOL

Scuba Cancun

Try Scuba Cancun, located near the big Mexican flag at the top of the hotel zone. The diving around Cancun is close to what you will find in the Florida Keys - nice, but not like Cozumel.

Scuba Cancun can arrange dives in Cozumel for you also. You take a van from your hotel to PDC, board the ferry, meet your dive operator on the Cozumel side for a two-tank dive. After diving you are dropped back at your hotel in Cancun.

We stayed at the Westin in Cancun - very nice.

Watch out for the time-share gimmicks.

Rich

If you're planning on diving the cenotes I'd recommend Dennis Weeks of Aquanauts/Diablo Divers in Puerto Aventuras. He's an excellent diver and guide. We did a bunch of ocean dives with his shop too and were very happy with them.

We used Manta Divers, and were very satisfied.

We used a French outfit in PDC called Phocea and were very happy, but there are a lot of great outfits in Playa. It is very easy to get over to Cozumel either by ferry or on a dive operator's fast boat for some diving over there. Also make sure to check out the cenotes (freshwater caverns) around PDC.

We were in Cancun after Christmas to Jan 4th. We used Mayan Aqua Dive, operator's name was Ben email him at info@mayanaquadive.com
We took the 3 day package. Two tank dive in Cancun, two tank dive in Cozumel, two tank dive in the Cenotes (the best). They picked us each at our hotel. Highly recommended. Their 3 day package included all equipment including wetsuit if you need it. Visit their web site Mayan Aqua Dive offers Cancun Diving, Snorkeling, Cavern Diving, Cozumel Dives & PADI Courses If you do Cozumel and the Cenotes, ask Ben to hook you up with Alvaro. The very best!! If you do book, tell Ben that Jim & Tara said hello and we will be back soon.

Put me down as a third to recomend Ben. He was very helpful, ran a clean boat with SMALL trips. I just got back a 2 weeks ago, pic's at HTTP://www.flickr.com/photos/woodturner

If you do not have a place to stay, check out the Royal in Cancun! WOW we had a great time. Expedia had the best price we could find.

Please feel free to PM me if you have a any questions.

Cancun

I too cast my vote for Ben from Mayan Aqua Divers.
We dove with them last spring, did 8 dives in Cancun Coz and Cenotes.

Our favorite resort and dive shop on the peninsula is down at Puerto Aventuras, 15-20 miles south of Playa del Carmen. The resort is Aventura Spa Palace. 5 star resort, all inclusive, very romantic, great facilities, reasonable cost and not pretentious. Check it out at Palace Resorts - Welcome to the Official Site.

The dive shop is Dive Aventuras in the Omni Hotel in Puerto Aventuras, a 5 minute ride away and they pick you up at the Spa Palace for no charge. Their website is Dive Aventuras Mexico scuba diving vacation packages Puerto Aventuras. If you call them directly and make your own dive arrangements, you'll save money over what the Spa Palace charges you to dive with the same place.

The boat rides are only 5 to 10 minutes to the reefs. The reefs are relatively flat like Punta Tunich over at Cozumel, except there is very little current. The cenote diving is exceptional out of Puerto Aventuras. We thought the cenotes were the true adventure of our last trip there.

Have fun!!!!!
