Pygmy Seahorses

Here is a collection of shots of some Pygmy Seahorse from my trip to PNG.

These guys are really small and are between 5mm-10mm in length. They also very well camouflage and match the fan on which they live on. They dont like the light and live on the fans which are between 16-40m.

It was also an interesting dive as after I had taken pics of these guys I wa taking some more macro shots when the local guide started to bang his tank like crazy. I looked at him and his eyes were poping out of this head and he was madly pointing to my left. I turned around and saw a tail of a large whale shark swimming off in the distance. Typical 60mm and whale shark swims by. I also was at the back of the group and when we surface I asked if anyone else saw the whale shark as it came from the direction of where they were. Of course they thought i was pulling their leg until the guide came up and asked me what has that huge shark. He said it came right up to him and once he started to bang his tank to get my attention the whale shark took off.

Great pics Mark! I know how hard they are to get.

I have always heard the argument for digital compacts with wet lenses..."what if you were shooting macro and a whale shark swims by?" My answer was "hold my camera down and take a mental picture". You wouldn't have had time to unscrew a macro lens and screw on a WA lens anyway. I didn't think it was likely to happen....guess I was wrong.

The whale shark was a very unexpected addition. The owner of the resort has never seen one there and only reports of one other sighting years ago.

I was after the Pygmy Seahorses so I didnt have the 10-17mm on, which I had on for most of my boat dives.

Took a mental picture. Big bloody Tail swimming off into the blue.

The site was infront of a small village east of Albatross Passage, South of Kavieng. Basically in the middle of nowhere.
