ABALONE "KNife"

I bought a used "lot" of scuba stuff on ebay because it had bc hanger and accessory hanger in the lot for a really really good price.

In the lot i happened to get what seems to a knife.. its a squared off blunt tip, but there is no sharpened blade on it. Its more like a pry bar. The stainless portion is about 6 inches long and the black rubber handle is about 4 inches.

I dont forsee any use for this item because Im not even sure that there is abalone in the Long Island Area. Let alone the fact that I dont know what the hell it is..

Ill accept any reasonable offer, and will post a picture of the "knife" as soon as possible after getting off from work tonight or tomorrow morning. I was thinking around $15 dollars + shipping would be good.. but I will entertain any ideas of alternate prices or trades.

I could use some save a dive type stuff (o-rings, lube, etc) or other dive accessories. If its a trade you are after let me know, we will just exchange and not worry about the shipping

No pictures? It sounds to me like a scallop shucking knife.

Sorry, not many abalone here in Colorado either. I agree that pictures might help or try and find a west coast forum that may have greater interest.

It's called an "abalone iron". It's used as a pry bar in the manner you'd expect.

Abalone are protected in SoCal, so we don't have much use for them. You can take them in small numbers, with major rules and limitations, during certain times of the year, farther up north, but only freediving, no scuba.

I think Matt is correct. It sounds like a scallop knife. An old butter/table knife is what I use for scallops. Yum Yum!!! My Abalone iron is much larger and thick. California has specific minimum dimensions for an iron. It could never be confused with a knife which is probably illegal to use even though no sharp edges.

Someone here might want it... if you'll show us what it looks like. I don't guess you should expect much luck selling an item you advertise as "I don't know what the hell it is" with no picture.

An abalone iron ehh, why the hell would ya want to get rid of that..

Perhaps it could be a handy club, to fend of sea monsters and such!

Yup. And a CA Ab iron also frequently has dimensions/markings that allow the diver to use it to as a yardstick to ensure smaller (illegal) Abs never get taken / worked on. Although I don't have a current Ab license and so am not in the market, even if I were I'd still not likely buy something rumored to be an ab iron from outside California unless the seller demonstrated real knowledge about CA Ab regs, simply because the penalties associated with using an improper tool can be severe. (OP's tool may be a great deal -- I'm only saying it pays to be circumspect with respect to Abs and Ab tools in CA).
