SD & SDHC card questions - Memory card camcorders
For memory card camcorders, will a regular SD card work in an SDHC slot?
Also, will a card reader that accepts SD cards accept (and read) SDHC cards? Thanks - Last edited by rainmaker : 02-24-2008 at 07:21 PM. |

To the second, I'm not sure, because none of my cameras will take SDHC, so I don't own any. I'm curious if anyone knows the answer definitively. |

The first question is right.
As to the second, it depends. Some cards might some might not. Ive seen some readers that will read them and some that won't. I got a really nice cheap SDHC reader by sandisk that is the size of a thumb drive i your looking for a good one. |

The card goes in the reader, and the reader is plugged to the PC via USB? Is this it? (link below): SanDisk MobileMate SD+ SDHC Reader/Writer - SDDR-104-A11M - Flash Memory Store |

All SD cards can be read by SDHC compatible devices, but SD compatible devices probably won't be able to read SDHC cards. This is because, "SDHC uses a different memory addressing method (sector addressing vs byte addressing)." --> Wikipedia's entry
I own a Casio Exilim camera that was only designed to use regular SD cards. However, Casio has issued firmware upgrades that enable many of its cameras (including mine) to use SDHC cards. Thus, SDHC compatibility it is principly a software issue and not a hardware issue. If an SD card reader for PCs is unable to read SDHC cards, I imagine it would be a trivial fix to enable them to do so by means of some kind of software update. Check the manufacturer's website for such an update. You may not need to go out and buy anything. |
