Aiming a video light

I just got a tray, arm, and mounting stuff to use my bigblue light for video. Just checking it out in the house, I discovered the (should be) obvious. I can aim the light for like 3 to 5 feet away, and as long as I stay within that distance, it's fine. If I want close-ups, I have to re-aim the light. Same with far away shots, but the size of the light pattern creates that "spot light" effect. Is this just how it is, or am I missing something?
