Sony Vegas users-upgrade for discount available from Sony
Sony Vegas Pro version 8 is out today (9-10-07), and at an upgrade discount for existing users (yeah!, $100 off regular ugrade for a limited time). I've been using version 6, so I'm looking forward to getting this update.

Last week, when the link above was working, the upgrade price was $100 less, and it seemed to work for all prior Vegas versions, if the serial number had not been used for a previous upgrade. You may want to call Sony directly and see if they will still offer the reduced price upgrade.

Vegas Pro not really good for HD
Vegas is great software, but, to use it for HD editing is somewhat self-defeating. If when you record with an HD camera, you probably do so at a resolution of 1080i. Likewise, I'm sure that you would like to look at your video on an HDTV with 1080i. If you create a DVD with Vegas (and many other similar video editing programs) the best DVD that you can create is a standard DVD with an output/resolution of 720i !
The only software that I know of (within reason and less than $1k), is Premier CS3. It will allow you to print your 1080i work on to a Blu-Ray disk, and likewise will allow you to view it in true 1080i. If you print your edited HD video work on anything less than a Blu-ray disk, (or HD-DVD), you're not going to see the total quality that you originally recorded. Getting into HD video requires a LOT...It requires an HD camera, a HIGH quality computer, software capable not only of processing HD, but also capable of printing on to Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) disks, a Blu-Ray recorder, a Blu-Ray player, and a 1080i/p HD monitor or TV. If you can't afford all that, my suggestion is that you stay with a good quality Digital video camera that can record in 'wide' (16X9) format. You can then edit your video with lots of inexpensive software and print your work on a standard DVD and watch it on a wide-screen TV at a resolution of 720i; the resolution that the video was originally made at. Oceanic DataMask for photography
I don't have a DataMask YET, but I sure do want one. It seems 'just perfect' for photographers (both still and video) as we (photographers) always have both hands on our cameras/housings. When taking pictures, its VERY easy to let Time, Depth, and even ascent rates get out of hand. If we have our eye through the viewfinder the DataMask still allows us to see important dive info at a glance. If I put my old mask and computer under my pillow, do you suppose that the Oceanic fairy will bring me a new DataMask?![]() |

The information on Vegas Pro 8 indicates it can Burn Blu-ray disc from the timeline, don't know if it is 1080i or not. There are alot of folks using it to edit HD, so I think it can handle it fairly well. I usually down grade to DV, since I'm putting on regular DVD's. There is an option to write the HD file back to tape, so it can be viewed from the camera as HD. I like Vegas, and for the $140 upgrade price (good till Oct 31, 2007 for existing Vegas users), I'm very happy. Vegas is not for everyone, but I think for the price it offers a strong package. They have a very good forum on the Sony site at this link if you have any specific questions on what it can or cannot do:

Burning Blu Ray with Vegas 8
You can burn a blu-ray with Vegas 8. However, if you do, you can't have any Menus, Titles, chapters, etc. Thus, why bother making a "nice" blu-ray, if you can't do the 'nice' things with it. Take a look at Adobe Premier Elements, Ver 4. With Premier Elements 4 though, make sure that if you download 1080i HD from your camera, that you stay "HD" all the way; including burning your project to a Blu-ray. Otherwise, you will be disappointed in the results. (This goes for any software that is available!)
