Deep Diver

Someone posted a thread asking how deep everyone has dove. Got me thinking about WHY I have gone deep.

My deepest was to 104' and it was to see the ship wreck of the Frontenac in Lake Ontario (a wooden tug boat, sunk December 11th, 1929).

What was your deepest dive and why do you go there?

My true deepest was to do some NDT on an oil rig. My rec was to get someone who went over a wall due to being narc'd.

109ft on a dive to a spot where there were supposed to be Sharks mainly nurse sharks resting in these over hangs. But there were not any there which was o.k because the dive was still great. I went to 90+ on a wreck dive in Puerto Morales which was great. It had all three decks accessible to divers.

145-150' wreck dive for trimix checkout dive. The depth was one of the least challenging things about the dive. 5' seas, 10' vis, and 38 degree bottom temps with a leaky dry suit and deco obligation... that was challenging.

This reminds me of my 5th dive, after OW cert. Insta-buddy in Cuba. Wearing WAY too much weight (which saved him). We're checking out a wreck. Top was at 60'. His suit compressed and he dropped below 60'. Didn't notice he was dropping. Around 80' he dumps all the air in him BCD and drops like a rock to the bottom (101'). He just sits there on the bottom for a few seconds then drops his integrated weights. Fortunately, he has enough non-ditchable weight that he is still sitting on the bottom.

With only 5 dives under my belt I wasn't sure what to do and the group was moving to the stern. I thought, "Don't abandon your buddy" and dropped down to get him, filled his BCD with air and brought him back up to 60'. At around 70' he gave me a stunned look then started looking around with an expression that pretty much said, "What happened? What is going on?" The DM realized we were missing, came back and recovered his weights. DM switch buddies. I became her buddy and he was paired with the other DM on the dive.

I found out I get a paranoid feeling when I'm that deep. After that I made sure to catch my buddy before I have to do something stupid like go to 101' with no priority training or experience.
