Hello From The Snow Covered NC Mountains

Found this site about a week ago and really enjoy the posts/threads. You guys will help me make it through the cold winter.

I began diving 5 years ago. My wife and I spent the last three winters on a sailboat sailing around Florida and the Bahamas. Got to do a lot of good diving. Last June we discovered Roatan and plan to spend a few months each winter on the island.

Welcome homeboy. I'll have to see exactly where in our mountains you are. Haven't seen snow here in the flatlands for quite some time. Come east next summer and get some NC diving in!

Welcome to the forum. I live in northeast GA, just a few miles from western NC. I agree; the winters are long and cold. Can't wait to get back to diving at Lake Jocassee, SC next spring.

I spent 2 weeks diving in Roatan in 2007, have many fond memories and hope to get back there someday.

Hi

I'm in Ashe county. Four miles from Tenn. and 1/2 mile from Virginia.

What kind of diving is there in Lake Jocassee?

There are 3 main areas at Jocassee for diving. My favorite is the one that is set aside for shore diving, called the diver's ramp. It costs nothing to dive there, except a $2 per person entrance fee to Devil's Fork State Park. Just park, suit-up, walk into the water on an old boat ramp and dive. Viz is usually 15 - 20 feet, and there are several underwater attractions including a couple of fishing boats, an airplane wing, several training platforms and the Bones Family (group of artificial human skeletons near one of the boats). During summer, there are usually 25 - 50+ divers at the ramp on Saturdays and Sundays.

Then there's The Wall. When the lake was created, rock was blown out of the side of a mountain to get building material for the dam. This created a nearly sheer wall that extends underwater. There's also a wreck-dive in vicinity, called the Junk (replica of a Chinese Junk). A boat is needed for access to the area. Several dive ops run trips there on a regular basis spring thru fall. (Bermuda Triangle and Off The Wall Charters are the two that I'm familiar with. Bermuda Triangle is in Greenville, SC and you'll pass Bill Routh's Off The Wall Charters on your way to the lake.)

Then there's The Graveyard (featured in the movie "Deliverance"). A church cemetery was located there before the lake was built. Most (but not all) graves were relocated. A few headstones were left behind as well. A boat is needed for access. It is a popular dive on Halloween.

Most diving at Jocassee is done from about May 15 to the end of October. Water temps in mid-May are usually in the low 70's at the surface, increase to 83 - 85 in late summer, and go back down to the low 70's/high 60's by the end of October.

Jocassee is a gorgeous lake. Never knew about the diving.

I'm within a two hour drive of numerous mountain lakes in NC, TN, VA. I need to find some info on this area. I know there is a dive shop in Boone, but that's the only one I've found around here.
