Newbie from Northern VA

Hello all! I am a new diver. I was certified in 2005 but haven't got much diving in (except sticking my head in my fishtank) but now that I managed to get my boyfriend certified I am looking for places to dive. I have only dove in fresh water (quarries and the New River, southwest VA) but I would love to dive in the Cheasapeake Bay or in the Virginia Beach area. Anyone have any suggestions for two beginners? I got Dutch Springs in PA, anything else? Any clubs around here? Pool time would be nice practice too, my boyfriend is a goober who likes playing with underwater toys (you know those little torpedo things and the rings) .

Welcome to the board, Trio. You might check the sub-forums under the US diving section for local info on those places. Great avatar, BTW.

Welcome aboard Trio!

VA Beach does have some good diving. I recently dove on the "Tiger" with Lynnhaven Dive Center and thought it was a really great outfit. This dive is billed as a good beginner dive.

However diving in the Atlantic in our area is pretty cold and the vis is not great. Since you are coming back to diving and your BF is newly certified, I'd really suggest starting back up at a local quarry.

My personal recommendation: Lake Rawlings. It is about 3 hours away from NoVA, but it is a dedicated scuba park. Warm on the surface down to about 20 ft, colder at max depth of 60 ft (high 50s to low 60s). A great place to get comfortable in the water in a nice controlled environment: no current, no swells, etc...

Check out the Mid-Atlantic Darkwater Divers section of the forum. You will be able to hook up with some other divers from the area.

Good information! I was certified at Lake Rawlings so visiting again would be nice. I've heard that Millbrook in Haymarket is really crummy since they removed the zebra mussels but I may try it anyways. I will looking it the Alexandria regular pool dive.

Are there any river dive sites around here? Or are all the rivers to disgusting to swim in? I couldn't find any in the forum section for this area.

I don't know about any river dives in the area, but I see you posted a separate question.

If interested, let me know if you head down to Rawlings. I am hoping to get down there sometime this month, but haven't finalized my plans. Always happy to help split the cost of gas and meet new folks to dive with.
