I am in the Denton TX area and thinking about starting the OW traing at ST. I am just having a hard time giving up 2 weekends in a row with all the other things I am doing these days.

Be careful then... those two weekends in a row might just lead to many, many future weekends spent enthusiastically doing something other than the stuff you're doing these days.

Not knowing what the other things are I would say the opportunity of traveling to local and exotic locations and participating in something that the vast majority of people on this planet will never experience is a good investment.

The guys at Scuba Toys are great about helping with this kind of stuff......

Get things that fit...... ask about spring straps for your fins.

You can use the rental gear for free during the class and see what you like and or don't like about it and talk with the instructors about what they use or other students about what they might have bought.

The idea is to research and try things out if possible before you purchase. This will also depend on the type of diving you plan to be doing and the location and conditions.

And your weekends don't have to be in a row... You can do the pool work one weekend, then skip a few weeks, then go out to the lake any weekend you want later on.

Larry beat me to it. That is exactly what I did. Fortunate for me I got to have the same instructor both weekends. Have fun!

Don't rush into the equipment purchases... just get a mask that fits, and see if you can try out some different fins to see what you like. Take it from there, and by all means, ask for lots of advice!

Ah, another addict in the making! After getting OW you'll be looking for excuses to get out to Clear Springs in Terrell or *GASP* ways to get to the ocean on weekends!!
