Piston v. Diaphragm

As a new diver, I am overwhelmed with the number of choices concerning gear. Would anyone like to make an argument for either a piston or diaphragm as to what type of regulator is best? Or at least the pros and cons of each.

it is traditionally thought that diaphragm regs are better for cold water diving, however, some of the best cold water regs are piston ones, so you can't get a simple answer on what's better.
