1) Xcel.

2) Depends on if you need the warmth. A drysuit will cost less in the long run.

What water temps? There's almost no scenario I can imagine where I'd prefer a "semi-dry" over a DS. Agree with CD, that if you're going to end up buying a DS anyway, the SD makes little sense.

I haven't used my 7mm (not a "semi-dry") once since I got my first DS.

A semi-dry suite is wet suite and you are going to get wet.

I've had great luck with my custom from Custom Wetsuits, Scuba Diving Skins, Parkas from AquaFlite. It cost a bit less than off the shelf and fits great. I ordered on a Monday and had it delivered by Friday of that week.

So far, I've worn it down to 44 degrees and have yet to feel chilled, let alone cold. (7mm Farmer John.)

Just got a ScubaPro NovaScotia 6.5mm and anything warmer then 48 is comfortable. I did get chilled in 42 water after an hour. The semi-dry seals work great with me and keep me practically dry. I mean I still find air trapped in my suit through out the dive even though I try to purge all the air out before I start the dive. The down side is that I can no longer pee in my wetsuit because it will just stay there the whole dive now.

people pee in a wet suit?

seriously though, I am considering a semi-dry although I have heard the main downside is when the dive is over, now you in cold air and wet, you stay warm during the dive, but afterwards is where the negatives start

Good luck there, I'm going to bet he freezes. I've dove with buddies in a semi dry in those temperatures and they couldn't hack more than a short one dive trip.
