Wetsuit thickness
I'm just starting to get back to diving and am planning to do some diving locally this summer at CSSP in terrell Tx and am going to buy a wetsuit to fit those needs this summer.
My question is what thickness of wetsuit are most people using out there ? I was thinking about just getting a 3 mil for now and layering later if I need too I dont want to buy too thick of a suit where i would be overheated. Any advice would be appreciated. GregV |

I just dive a cheap 3mm SeaDog shortie I got at Sam's for $30 most of the time. If I want a little more protection I have a hybrid Scubapro 1mm/Lycra skin I pull over top. I'm pretty comfortable most of the time and the whole setup was only like $55. If I'm going somewhere cold I usually just rent, it's not worth it to me to shell out a couple of hundred bucks for a heavy duty wet suit that I am only going to use twice a year. I would look into surfing wetsuits, they are a lot cheaper than the scuba ones most of the time and the quality is not much different.

I dive CSSP a lot. There's a thermocline at about 15 feet. Above that, a 3mm is fine. There's another thermo about 25-30 feet.
At the first thermo, you can feel the chill, and you won't want to remain long in a 3mm; same can be said for the second. You will be more comfortable, though if you go to a 5mm. Last weekend, I saw folks in 7mm and drysuits. But, they were staying at depth (about 40+) for a longer length of time. Bottom line: 3mm is fine if you you don't plan extended stays below the thermos. Now, that said, I've been at CSSP in January: 46 degree water. Brisk. I just looked at my dive computer for CSSP dives last weekend: Surface temp was 88. 74 at 20 feet and lower If you need a dive buddy, just give me a PM. FYI...ScubaDillos are diving Athens on 28 June. No wetsuit needed. Come join us.
