Yeah, I did the nail with the pliers over the stove trick as well .... worked very nicely!

I heard the same for boots. That they put holes near the toes under the boot to help drain water. never tried it though.

Maybe they are trying to drain the yellow water.

I got a hood last year to go for a winter trip to Roatan. I was unaware of the "Marvin the Martian" effect until I felt the pulling during my first dive with the hood. I used some scissors to cut a series of slits along the midline from the top of the hood to the neck 3 or four total. I have 22 dives in the hood which is now about a year old, and haven't noticed any ravelling of the material. If I hav been at home when I vented the hood, I probably would have used the hot tool technique, but I don't think it really makes that much of a difference.
