Thicknesses?

Can you please give me a rough idea of necessary thickness for a wetsuit?

Dry and Dry...though I'm sure quite a bit of people dive 7MM in the summer, but past 40 feet you'll be wishing you were dry

Prouty is correct. You will be able to dive shallow in the summerbut once you hit thethermocline you will want to go dry

So, how many wetsuits does a serious recreational diver own?

I am far from a serious rec diver but I own three. I own a 3mm for the tropics, a 7mm for summer diving in the quarrys and a drysuit for cold or deep water diving in freshwater.

I only dive warmer waters and have a 3 mil farmer john and a 3 mil full. That way I can wear both together if necessary. I plan on adding a 7 at some point.

3mm, 7mm and drysuit here... usually use drysuit or just swimuit.
