I wish you luck. Used 40's seem to be the hardest tanks to find. As soon as I have ever seen one go up for sale it's sold within hours if not minutes. Many places to pick up a new one if you don't care who makes it. You see them come up on thedecostop sometimes but they don't last long.

Here's a good link on making a stage kit. Really not hard to do. I've made a few and also bought them when I was lazy.

You would almost be better off getting a new one from scuba toys. they are only 133 with a 10% discount so you are down to 119.7. I bought a used one off of ebay for 100 with shipping. I wish i just got a new one for 20 more. I made the rigging for the 40 and bought the rigging for an 80. I havent used them yet so it would be interesting to see which one i like better.

The only issue is ScubaToys doesn't carry Luxfer or Hymark, so you'd be stuck with Catalina's, which would work, but have less desirable handling characteristics.

Catalina's are great for backgas or mounted ponies, but they don't float as nicely as Luxfer or Hymark, if you're slinging them deco-style.

Have you tried both? I am not trying to be demeaning or anything, i have seen alot of posts of people saying that there is a difference, but I know people who cant tell any difference. On my single 80's i cant tell the difference between the catalina or the luxfer. I would liket to try both as a stage though to better get an idea. Or just take the two in a pool and let them rest on the bottom and compare them.

Personal preference can play a big role here. I've been perfectly happy with the way my Catalina 40 slings. I've also got a Luxfer 80 which I've also slung and no real issues there either. I didn't like the floatiness of the luxfer 40 last time I used one but it wasn't a dramatic difference and didn't affect the quality of my dive in the least. I've also carried a luxfer and a catalina 40 at the same time and it wasn't that big a deal to me them being a little different, again it didn't affect the quality of my dive any.

Not sure where you're located, but I have a spare DIN Luxfer AL40 with current vis and hydro that I'd be willing to part with for $75 + shipping. It's brushed aluminium finish, and has minor galvanic pitting from the hose clamp that was used with the stage rigging, but it wasn't a problem when I had it inspected. It's O2 compatible/clean, and has only been wet about a dozen times... Send me a PM if you're interested.

I used a Catalina 88 last weekend, for the first time. By the end of the dive it was down to about 50 bar and if not for the weight of the reg, would probably have floated. It was certainly 'tail-light'. I've not used a Luxfer 88, but the Catalina 88 was as easy underwater as my Luxfer 65.
